In this unit you will learn how we can work together to help reduce poverty by shopping more responsibly. Blood Diamonds are diamonds that have been found and sold by armed groups who use the money they make fromthe diamonds to continue fighting violent wars (but more on this later!). Buying the final product, in this case the expensive jewelry, has an effect on others lives around the world. In this unit we want you to think about where your possessions, food and clothing comes from and think about what you can do to support products that actually help reduce poverty and better the lives of others worldwide. We want you to think about everything from the banana that’s been slipped into your lunchbox to the mobile phone you use to text and call your friends!
The Blood Diamonds Project is funded by The Department for International Development (DFID). DfID is the part of the UK government that manages Britain's aid to poor countries and works to get rid of extreme poverty. DfID is working to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the international targets agreed by the United Nations (UN) to halve world poverty by 2015 and is supporting Rafi.ki to raise public awareness and understanding of global poverty and how it can be reduced.
